Our Growing Practices

We grow our produce using only organic growing practices that focus on creating healthy soil, plants, and ecosystems.

  • Soil Health: Our soil management practices include compost, cover crops, crop rotation, and organically approved fertilizers.  We use small-scale human-powered tools like a broadfork and tilther to prepare our beds without disturbing soil life and structure.
  • Pest Control: Even in healthy gardens, pests happen! We use row covers, netting, and traps to avoid the pests before they cause problems. We choose varieties of crops that are resistant to pests and diseases.
  • Season Extension: We use heated and unheated "high tunnels" to give seasonally appropriate crops the best shot at thriving. You won't see us grow tomatoes in January, but tomatoes in June and spinach in February are pretty nice!

These careful, labor-intensive practices create healthy and nutrient-dense crops that truly nourish people.  We know you'll taste a difference.

Our Story

In 2011, we began developing vacant land on South Meridian Street into a farm, South Circle Farm. Spearheaded by Amy Matthews, the land slowly transformed into a series of garden plots producing fresh veggies for local markets and a CSA. Partnering with other local farmers Matthew Jose and Leslie Gottschalk, we grew together as Mad Farmers Collective and added infrastructure to make year-round production possible. We're proud to have helped establish the Garfield Park Farmers Market, and enjoyed welcoming dozens of tour groups and workshops to the farm site over the years.

Just as our crops change with the seasons, this farm changes and evolves through seasons of life. Beginning in 2024, we are so excited to share this space with other growers, expand our nursery, and move more of our veggie production to our home in Perry Township on the southside.
